画展简介

This 10-day exhibition that combines physical and AR art is a comprehensive retrospective of one of Singapore’s living legends of modern art – Goh Beng Kwan. He turns 85 this year, making him one of the rare artists of his generation who is still actively creating art. Mr. Goh is best known for his mixed medium abstract collages and his time-bending creative versatility which explores issues around Cultural Representation, Urbanism and Identity.

This show is in celebration of his 85th year of life, his values Generosity, Bravery, and Kinship, and also in support of Mental Healthfulness brought about by his creative expression through his 60 years of being an artist.

His body of work is ever-evolving; from ink to collages to NFT – this immersive show will take you on a journey through sixty years of his illustrious career as an artist.

THE ARTIST

Mr. Goh Beng Kwan, 85, is a Singapore senior artist who has been a visual arts artist in Singapore for more than 60 years. He has dedicated his whole life pursuing his passion for art. He is considered an inspiration and legend to many young artists in Singapore.

His art practice began at Hwa Chong High School under the tutelage of first-generation senior artist Chen Wen Hsi in the 1950s. Despite failing Art as a subject in the final leaving school examination in the late 50s, Mr. Goh never gave up his dream to be an artist. He went to New York to pursue an art education from 1962 to 1966.

Whilst in New York, he took on multiple jobs to support himself and almost died due to a peptic ulcer in the stomach. But he never gave up. He had his first solo exhibition at the Ruth Sherman Gallery in New York in 1965. Despite his success in New York, Mr. Goh decided to return to Singapore because he wanted to take care of his aging parents.

Back in Singapore, Mr. Goh’s artwork, “The Dune”, won the first UOB Painting of the Year in 1982. He was also awarded the Cultural Medallion in 1989. Till today, he is often recognised as an artistic forerunner in arts through his collage works. Many of his artworks can be seen around Singapore at locations such as Maybank Tower, Farrer Park Hospital, Singapore Turf Club, Conrad Centennial and Punggol MRT station.

ArtAF APP / AR ARTWORKS

Over the many decades of his illustrious career,
Goh Beng Kwan has been able to remain current despite the changing times because of his willingness to experiment and his eagerness to learn.

This section of Augmented Reality (AR) works exemplifies this positive, forward-thinking attitude, as he strives to embrace and incorporate new and relevant technologies in his art making and display.

The AR pieces in this exhibition are site-specific, allowing the audience to view the artworks through the camera on the app despite the absence of the physical pieces. Besides the static images of these works that are not hanging in the exhibition, the AR segment will include 4 animated NFT works that will bring to life 4 original works by the artist, each piece chosen to represent a key period in his practice.

In addition, the app offers access to all 85 works of art from the exhibition and allows the audience to view the artworks not only from the comfort of their own homes, but also “hanging” on their walls. Here, the AR technology offers these Goh’s works a new dimension while giving the viewers a fresh perspective and a new means of engaging with the art.
